Jonah Series Small Group Questions

Monday

  • What are the most difficult “borders” for you to cross and why?
  • What are the excuses you use to avoid the call to neighbor love and how does the gospel address those excuses?
  • Where do you have opportunities in your life to immediately respond to the call of God in this text?

Tuesday

  • What are some “functional gods” people on your campus turn to for rescue?
  • In this text, Jonah was asleep as his neighbors fell into panic and idolatry. How does this text challenge or affirm your life of faith right now in relation to your neighbors?
  • How does the grace of God empower us to life faithfully amidst the people on “our boat”?

Wednesday

  • This passage doesn’t just show us that God gives second chances—it points to the second Adam, Jesus, who makes true repentance and renewal possible. How does the gospel empower us to live on mission—not just to try harder, but to live differently?
  • What barriers in your life keep you from delivering God’s Word across lines of class, culture, or social status? How does the gospel address those barriers.
  • Some Americans Christians are focused exclusively on personal change, while others are focused exclusively on social change. How does this text speak into this tension and clarify our calling as God’s people?

Thursday

  • In what ways are you tempted to live out a “grace for me, karma for you” spirituality? How does this show up in your relationships or reactions to people unlike you? Be specific.
  • Jonah had grace in his mouth but karma in his heart. Where in your life do your core attitudes contradict the gospel you claim to believe? How does the grace of Jesus empower you to change?
  • The sermon warned that we can be guilty of “false advertising”—claiming to be a grace-filled, welcoming people without backing it up with our lives. What would it look like for your life or your community to display “truth in advertising”? Where do you see integrity? Where do you see gaps? How can the grace of God renew us and make us a “truth-in-advertising” community?
  • How has the entire story of Jonah informed your understanding of Jesus Christ and the Christian life?
